Verdict: the whole Company, with a real engine

This is a low-to-mid-power casual deck built for social four-player Commander. Expect proactive, board-based games rather than cEDH speed: it has no intentional infinite combo, no extra-turn loop, no mass land denial, and no fast combo finish. Under Wizards’ current optional bracket language, it is intended for a Core/Bracket 2-style conversation, subject to the table’s judgment and the beta bracket system.1

The flavor standard is stricter than “some Tolkien cards.” Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk leads the twelve other named Dwarves of the Company-Balin, Dwalin, Fíli, Kíli, Dori, Nori, Óin, Glóin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, and Ori-and Bilbo, Unexpected Adventurer joins them. Gandalf, Smaug, Landroval, Belladonna Took, story Sagas, Lembas, and The Battle of Bywater reinforce the setting. The list contains 30 nonbasic cards from HOB, HOC, or LTR, plus HOB basics.

The compromise is functional rather than cosmetic: red-white needs inexpensive ramp, removal, protection, draw, and Equipment that Middle-earth products alone do not supply at this cap. Generic Magic Dwarves and artifacts fill those jobs. No protected story text, official art, or logo is reproduced here.

Why Thorin wins at this budget

Thorin does two jobs from the command zone:

  • When Thorin or another Dwarf enters, he makes a Treasure. That turns the creature-heavy Company into its own ramp engine.
  • Every artifact token-not merely every Treasure-gives each other Dwarf +1/+0. Dáin’s Axe, Food from The Battle of Bywater, and Goldvein Pick’s Treasures all become an army-wide power boost.

That is unusually efficient for a budget tribe. Most of the newly released Company members cost less than $1 in the selected printings, so the deck can preserve the complete cast while still buying competent interaction and mana. Bifur and Fíli provide the ceiling: once the story is enduring, Bifur makes a Dwarf’s triggered ability trigger an additional time; Fíli turns each nontoken Dwarf into another Dwarf body. Thorin then sees those bodies too.

A rules detail matters: “storied” permanently gives you an enduring story once you control three or more artifacts, legendary permanents, and/or Sagas in total. Losing those permanents later does not undo it. Establish that condition before leaning on Bifur, Fíli, Dáin, or Kíli.

Price arithmetic and method

Category Cards Distinct rows Subtotal
Commander 1 1 $14.59
Creatures 31 31 $29.57
Artifacts 12 12 $7.90
Enchantments 5 5 $4.63
Instants 8 8 $5.89
Sorceries 7 7 $6.69
Lands 36 17 $3.74
Total 100 81 $73.01
Cap buffer $1.99

Arithmetic: $14.59 + $29.57 + $7.90 + $4.63 + $5.89 + $6.69 + $3.74 = $73.01. The twelve HOB Plains and nine HOB Mountains had snapshot quotes of $0.13 and $0.12 respectively, but their budget units are $0 exactly as the assignment requires.

Pricing methodology

  1. I used Scryfall’s default-cards bulk snapshot, whose metadata reported update time 2026-08-23T21:05:24.281Z; it was retrieved at 2026-08-23T23:02:14.100893Z and accessed for this report at 23:15 UTC.23
  2. For each name, I screened all snapshot printings for English language, paper availability, a nonfoil finish, a non-null USD quote, and an official TCGplayer purchase URI. I excluded promos, digital/oversized/full-art/textless cards, memorabilia/tokens/funny sets, special showcase-style treatments where an ordinary version existed, and The List. I then selected the lowest current USD quote among those ordinary candidates. For HOB/HOC/LTR story cards and basics, I preferred the specified story-set printing; the table makes every such choice explicit.
  3. Bilbo, Unexpected Adventurer (HOC #98) is a disclosed exception: the snapshot contains only that English nonfoil printing, marked extended art. Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk (HOC #3) likewise has only one English nonfoil product in the snapshot, marked with the set’s inverted frame treatment. Each is therefore its name’s cheapest available nonfoil printing in the data, but together they are the list’s most important availability/volatility risk.
  4. Scryfall describes the card-object prices field as daily price information and provides purchase_uris to marketplace listings.3 The merchant links above are the decoded direct www.tcgplayer.com/product/{id} destinations supplied by those objects. They contain no partner wrapper, affiliate ID, UTM tag, or sub-ID.
  5. “Playable condition” here means the ordinary English nonfoil product, using the daily nonfoil USD quote as the reproducible price proxy. It is not a promise that a specific seller’s Near Mint or Lightly Played copy will remain at that price. Confirm the live seller line and condition before buying.

Volatility and availability: all 81 distinct rows had a non-null price and purchase URI; no price was silently imputed. Browser automation spot-checked Thorin, Bilbo, Bofur, Plains, Impact Tremors, and Command Tower. Product IDs and, where rendering completed, card/set titles matched; TCGplayer’s dynamic listing panels displayed “No Listings Available” during automation even for low-value current cards, so stock and seller-condition availability could not be established reliably. Treat that as an automation limitation and do a human live-cart check. The $1.99 buffer disappears after only a 2.7% increase in the priced deck.

Opening hand and mulligan guide

Keep hands with:

  • three or four lands, including access to both red and white; or two lands plus a two-mana rock and at least one castable early play;
  • one or two cheap artifacts, legends, or Sagas that move you toward an enduring story;
  • a draw/filter piece such as Kíli, Idol of Oblivion, Horn of the Mark, Mask of Memory, Faithless Looting, or a protection spell if the pod is removal-heavy.

A strong but realistic keep is three lands, a two-mana rock, a cheap Company Dwarf, one value permanent, and interaction. Sol Ring improves a two-land hand, but do not keep a speculative one-lander merely because it contains Sol Ring.

Mulligan hands with one land; no source of one color by turn three; five or more cards costing four-plus mana; or all removal and no way to develop. The commander costs five, so an opening hand that “does nothing until Thorin” is too slow.

Sequencing the adventure

Early game: turns 1-3

Develop mana and establish the story, not a random attack. Prioritize Arcane Signet, Boros Signet, Talisman of Conviction, a Saga, or a low-cost legendary Dwarf. Roads Go Ever, Ever On does not ramp immediately, but it secures the next two Plains and later creates a large attack trigger. Hold Faithless Looting until it can fix an actual problem or stock a card Bilbo/Dawn can recover.

If Kíli, Belladonna, Impact Tremors, Horn of the Mark, or Idol of Oblivion is available, deploy the engine before the token burst. Be aware that Mentor of the Meek is strongest early or after a reset: existing artifact tokens can make entering Dwarves too powerful for its power-2 trigger condition.

Midgame: turns 4-7

Cast Thorin when he can survive or produce value immediately. He creates a Treasure from his own entry. Follow him with cheap Dwarves; each one adds Treasure while making all the other Dwarves larger. Preserve Treasures through combat when the anthem matters, then spend them in the second main phase or on protection.

Aim to turn on the enduring story before Bifur or the storied payoffs matter. Fíli is the most explosive follow-up: a nontoken Dwarf entering can produce another Dwarf, and Thorin sees both. With an enduring Bifur in play, Dwarf-triggered abilities-including Thorin’s and Fíli’s-trigger an additional time. Belladonna rewards the first, second, and third token entries in a turn with life, a card, and a team counter respectively.

Do not cast every Dwarf merely because mana is available. Three relevant attackers plus a protected engine can be enough; keep one or two creatures for rebuilding after a wipe.

Late game

Use Horn of the Mark and Depala to keep creatures flowing, then engineer one decisive combat. Dáin Ironfoot gives equipped attackers double strike; Landroval gives one attacker flying; Dwalin grows Equipment; Bruenor amplifies equipped creatures; Fíli and Depala supply anthems. Roads Go Ever, Ever On can turn a Plains-heavy attack into the last push.

If combat stalls, let artifact and creature entries drain the table through Reckless Fireweaver and Impact Tremors. Smaug is a clean flying backup threat, while Gandalf divides damage among blockers or weakened players.

Win conditions

Primary: a Treasure-swollen Dwarf attack

Thorin converts each Dwarf into both a body and an artifact token. Hold enough tokens to keep the team’s power high, remove the best blockers, and use Dáin’s double strike or Landroval’s flying to force damage through. This is not an infinite combo; it is a visible, interactable board finish.

Backup 1: entry damage

Impact Tremors damages every opponent for creature entries; Reckless Fireweaver does the same for artifact entries. Fíli, Dwarven Reinforcements, Dwarven Hammer, the commander, Dori, Big Score, Goldvein Pick, and the Misty Mountains Saga all feed one or both routes.

Backup 2: Balin’s enduring story

After the story is enduring, Balin can turn a hand refresh into damage to each opponent whenever a Dwarf enters. Time the optional discard when it improves the hand or meaningfully pressures life totals; do not throw away a strong grip for marginal damage.

Backup 3: evasive legends

Smaug and Landroval attack in the air. Bilbo slips past creatures with power 3 or greater; Landroval can grant him flying when two creatures attack. A connecting Bilbo can return one of your mana-value-three-or-less nonland permanents-Kíli, Thorin Oakenshield, Impact Tremors, an Equipment, or a Saga-from your graveyard to your battlefield.

Key interactions worth knowing

  1. Thorin + any Dwarf: one Treasure on entry; that token immediately increases every other Dwarf’s power.
  2. Thorin + Fíli: a nontoken Dwarf produces both its own Thorin trigger and Fíli’s Dwarf token, which creates another Thorin trigger.
  3. Enduring Bifur + Thorin/Fíli: each qualifying Dwarf ability triggers an additional time. This is the deck’s highest-ceiling fair sequence.
  4. Thorin + Belladonna: multiple Treasure/Dwarf-token entries climb Belladonna’s once-per-turn ladder from life to a card to a team-wide +1/+1 counter.
  5. Dáin + Dwalin/Bruenor/Goldvein Pick: better Equipment plus double strike turns one open lane into lethal-looking damage and more Treasure.
  6. Bilbo + Landroval: attack the same player with Bilbo and another creature, grant Bilbo flying, and recur a cheap permanent when he connects.
  7. Dusk // Dawn after a reset: Dusk is an emergency wipe, not reliably one-sided while Thorin is buffing the team. Dawn later returns many printed-power-two-or-less Company cards from the graveyard.
  8. Protection layering: Concerted Care protects one artifact or creature; Make a Stand and Your Temple Is Under Attack protect the creature team; Thorin Oakenshield adds ward {1} after the story endures. None of these saves artifact tokens from a mass artifact wipe.
  9. Reconstruct History: after attrition, it can return one artifact, one enchantment, one instant, and one sorcery at once. Sequence discards and trades to maximize types.

Matchups (theory-based; no games played)

Best positioned against:

  • Slower battlecruiser and creature-midrange decks. The Company becomes larger than ordinary ground creatures, while Dusk, The Battle of Bywater, and Blasphemous Act offer resets when behind.
  • Removal-light value decks. Thorin compounds every Dwarf into mana and power, so unanswered turns scale quickly.
  • Artifact-reliant boards. Abrade, Wear // Tear, Duergar Hedge-Mage, Burn, Burn, Tree and Fern, Plundering Barbarian, and especially overloaded Vandalblast create unusually good coverage for a budget tribal list.
  • Pods leaning on a few large blockers. Bilbo naturally ignores power-3-or-greater blockers, and Landroval can lift a key attacker over the ground.

Weak against:

  • Fast combo and spell-stack decks. The list has useful permanent removal but no counterspells and no turn-three race.
  • Repeated sweepers, exile wipes, and mass artifact removal. Losing creatures and all artifact tokens together removes both the army and its power multiplier.
  • Wide token defenses, fogs, and pillow-fort enchantments. Most Dwarves lack native trample or evasion; one flying grant may not be enough.
  • Graveyard hate. Bilbo, Dawn, Reconstruct History, and The Mountain-king’s Return all lose value.
  • Hard commander suppression. Thorin costs five, and repeated removal makes the engine increasingly expensive.

Recovery and threat assessment

Treat Thorin as an engine, not a turn-five obligation. Against open mana, cast a lower-value Dwarf or Saga first and make opponents spend interaction. Hold Concerted Care for Thorin or a critical artifact, and reserve team indestructibility for wipes rather than routine combat.

After a wipe, rebuild in this order: card advantage or recovery first, then Thorin, then cheap Dwarves. Dawn retrieves much of the Company; The Mountain-king’s Return recurs a small creature; Bilbo returns cheap permanents; Heirloom Blade replaces an equipped Dwarf; Reconstruct History recovers multiple noncreature types. Do not deploy the entire recovered hand at once.

Prioritize opposing combo engines, repeatable exile, and effects that will destroy all artifacts. Save Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile for commanders or creatures that enable an immediate win; use Abrade, Generous Gift, Wear // Tear, and the Dwarf removal bodies on ordinary engines. If another player presents the clear table threat, let the pod help rather than exposing Thorin’s board first.

Prioritized upgrades beyond the cap

Prices are from the same dated snapshot and are not included in $73.01.

  1. Academy Manufactor ($7.71) over Spare Supplies: each Treasure event can become a Food, Clue, and Treasure, creating three artifact tokens for Thorin’s anthem.
  2. Panharmonicon ($6.03) over Dwarven Hammer: doubles many creature-entry triggers, including Thorin, Fíli, Dori, Dáin, Belladonna, and utility creatures.
  3. Magda, Brazen Outlaw ($10.13) over Plundering Barbarian: a Dwarf lord, repeatable Treasure source, and artifact/Dragon tutor.
  4. Dwarven Recruiter ($9.54, ODY #186) over Warchanter Skald: stacks the exact Company members needed next; pair with an existing draw engine.
  5. Skullclamp ($5.70) over Goldvein Pick: turns expendable Dwarf tokens into efficient cards.
  6. Professional Face-Breaker ($6.14) over Fearless Liberator: converts combat into both Treasure and impulse draw.
  7. Warleader’s Call ($5.66) over Mentor of the Meek: adds an anthem and a second Impact Tremors effect.
  8. Molten Echoes ($8.90) over Burn, Burn, Tree and Fern: choose Dwarf to copy each nontoken Company member for temporary attackers and extra entry triggers.

These are priorities, not a recommendation to buy all eight. Upgrade one axis at a time and recheck the deck’s table expectation.

Rules and legality

Wizards’ Commander page states that a deck is 99 cards plus one commander, uses singleton construction except for basic lands, and limits every card to the commander’s color identity.1 Thorin is a legendary creature with red-white identity. The snapshot reported legalities.commander = legal for all 81 distinct entries; every color identity was a subset of {R,W}. Quantity expansion produced exactly 100 cards, and Oracle-ID duplicate checking found no duplicate nonbasic/card entry.

The official Commander banned section was accessed on 2026-08-23 and checked directly.4 It listed the Conspiracy card type, ante cards, the separately linked offensive-card class, Lutri only as a companion, and these 42 named cards:
